Chapter 9: For Show

"Cash," I said. "Saturday morning."

Dean's grin spread slowly across his face.

"That's my guy."

"Ten thousand, and you bring it to the Marlowe yourself."

"Done." He clapped my shoulder with the hand that had signed my resignation. "And bring Erin to the rehearsal Thursday. Marlene wants everyone there. We'll be adults about it."

"Sure."

He thought he had bought me for a fifth of what he'd taken.

I walked out through the curtain, collected my receipt from the assistant, and met Erin at the tie rack.

She didn't ask me anything.

She looked at my face, and her eyes narrowed, and she said, "Good."

"I didn't tell you what he said."

"I know what he said. Whatever he offered, you took it."

"How do you know?"

"Because you look like a man who just stole something," she said. "It suits you."

On Thursday at six, the Marlowe's ballroom was set up exactly the way I'd planned it, with white chairs in rows and a long runner down the aisle.

I had chosen the flowers in August.

Brooke stood at the front in a pale blue dress with her hand on the back of a chair, and Marlene was beside her with a clipboard.

The wedding party was there, six friends of Dean's I had never liked, scattered across the first rows with plastic cups.

Dean saw us come in and raised a glass.
