Chapter 10: The Boardroom Table

I did not remember leaving the ballroom.

I remembered Vicki's hand on my arm and the elevator doors, and then a hand that was not Vicki's closing around my wrist in the corridor.

"Not here," Nolan said. "Come with me."

He pulled me through a door marked BOARDROOM B and locked it behind us.

The room was dark except for the strip of city light along the windows.

A long walnut table ran down the middle, and sixteen leather chairs stood around it with their backs to us.

"I'll take the swab," he said. "On Monday. I'll tell him it's mine."

"Then he'll know I'm yours, and the marriage comes out the next minute."

"Let it."

"Friday, Nolan. Your vote."

"I don't care about the vote."

"You cared for four months."

He dragged both hands through his hair.

"Tell me what you want me to do," he said, and his voice cracked in the middle. "I will do it. I'll stand up in that ballroom and say you're my wife. I'll say it right now."

"Why didn't you say it on Tuesday?"

He didn't answer, and the silence went on too long.

"Tell me you're not ashamed of me," I said.

"I'm ashamed of me," Nolan said.

It was so plain and so quiet that all the anger I had been carrying fell out of my hands.

I crossed the dark room and took his face between my palms.

"You promised me Friday," I said. "And I'm tired, and I'm furious, and I'm here."

His eyes closed.

I kissed him, and it was slower than before, and I felt him shudder from his shoulders down.

"Sit," I said, and I pushed him into the nearest leather chair.

I knelt between his knees on the thick carpet, carefully, one hand on the arm of the chair.
