Chapter 8: The Postcard

"They're wrong about everything except this," I said.

I was still on top of him, with the planks hard under my knees and my sweater rucked up to my ribs.

"I know," he said. "That's the problem."

He sat up with me in his lap and held my face in both hands.

"Not on a dock, with half the town able to see your window. Not because of a toast. I want you to be sure."

"I've been sure for five years."

"Then you can be sure tomorrow."

He took the cat up to the loft with him, and I stayed on the couch.

I lay there with my mouth still swollen and listened to him not sleep.

In the morning I took the postcard out of my bag.

It had been in the zip pocket for five years, and I had looked at the stamp the night before.

It showed a glacier.

On the back he had written: "Cold here. Hope you're well. C."

I laid it on the kitchen counter next to his coffee.

He saw it and went white around the mouth.

"You kept that," he said.

"It's the only thing you ever sent me. I'd like to know what you meant by it."

"I meant I was alive."

"You didn't say goodbye, Cal."

"I couldn't."

"I woke up the morning after my birthday and your truck was gone and your room was empty and my mother was crying in the kitchen. Nobody would tell me why."
