Chapter 9: The Folder

Mason's POV

The email came in at 3:07 a.m., from an auditor I trust.

Subject line: Brightwater Home, Pennock Trust. Full file attached. Call me.

I had asked him to look at the Home's books on the night of the gala.

I'd done it because Mrs. Lund's smile had made the hair stand up on my neck.

I left Jo asleep in my bed and took the call in my study, with the door half shut.

"Read the first page," the auditor said. "Then the third. Then sit down."

I was already sitting.

The first page was a trust deed, dated twenty years ago.

Daniel and Ellen Pennock, killed on a highway in November, leaving a daughter of six.

The trust held eleven million dollars.

It had been set up for the care of Joanna Pennock until she reached thirty, with the Brightwater Home as her guardian-in-fact and Patricia Lund as sole trustee.

I read the line twice.

Jo's parents had built the Pennock Wing.

They had paid for it before they died, and named it after themselves.

Everyone at the Home knew it.

Nobody had ever told Jo.

"What does the trust pay out?" I said.

"Thirty-one hundred a month to the Home for her board and keep. Plus tuition, medical, and a clothing allowance. Her parents were thorough."

"For twenty years."

"For twenty years. And that's before the draws."

The third page was a table of withdrawals.
