Everyone Who Entered the Forbidden Room Wanted Me Dead novel · Chapter 15 of 32

Chapter 15: Gathering

I climbed out of the gully with my hands open, and Elias climbed out beside me.

Nobody touched us.

Two hundred wolves stood in a half circle on the frozen road, and every one of them was looking at my father.

"You broke your confinement," Declan said. His voice was calm and tired. "You took a guard out of his post and walked toward the border at dawn."

"Sabine walked me there," I said.

Sabine gasped.

"Bryn, no." She turned to the pack with her hand on her chest. "I followed them. I tried to stop her. She said she would kill me."

A few of the hunters growled.

I let them.

Then I said it as loudly as I could, in the voice I had found at the dinner table.

It rolled over the road, and the growling stopped.

"I opened the Forbidden Room last night."

The pack went rigid.

"It took one brass key. My father keeps it in a drawer, and he lied to you for twenty years about who could open that door."

"Liar," Declan said.

"The room is the Heart Stone of this pack. My mother gave her blood to it on the night I was born, of her own free will, to bind me as the anchor. It is carved on the wall. 'Let none blame the child.'"

Somebody in the crowd laughed.

Then more of them did, a thin ugly sound that went down the line.

"She's making it up," a hunter said. "She killed the Luna and now she wants her pardon."

"The wall says you stay strong as long as I live inside the border," I said. "That is why nobody was ever allowed to take me away. My father cut a spell into the bottom of that wall twenty years ago. He signed it D. H."
