Chapter 13: The Door
"Yes," I said.
I didn't look away from him.
"I followed them on a bus because I was still protecting her. Even then."
"You followed them." His laugh had nothing in it. "That was your plan. A bus."
"It was the plan I had."
"You had a better one. You had one sentence."
His hands tightened on the wheel.
"You could have said it in my kitchen. Or at midnight, over that stupid sandwich."
"I know."
"I asked you once. One rule."
"I know, Nate."
"Stop saying you know."
The rain came down so hard the ER sign was a red smear.
He wasn't shouting.
That was worse.
"She had a key to my house," he said. "She bathed my daughter."
"She drove her on the freeway. Do you know how many times?"
"No."
"Neither do I."
He turned and looked at me.
"And I can't ask you if she'd been drinking. You'd decide what I get to know."
I took that.
It was true.
"I thought it was my secret to keep," I said. "It wasn't. Not once she was in your house."
