Chapter 16: The Atrium

The atrium of the children's hospital had a three-story mobile of paper whales hanging from the skylight.

Under it sat a folding table with a sheet cake and silver balloons.

CONGRATULATIONS SHELBY, the cake said, in blue gel.

There were maybe forty people.

Nurses with paper plates, two doctors, a woman from the hospital newsletter with a camera.

And my mother, in her good cardigan, at the front, beaming.

Nate stood behind me by a pillar with his hands in his coat pockets.

On Thursday night I'd called him and said, "I'm asking. Come Friday."

He'd said, "What do you need?"

"Stand at the back. Don't say anything. Don't fix anything."

"That's going to kill me."

"I know."

Now he was standing at the back, saying nothing.

The charge nurse tapped a plastic fork on a cup.

She was a gray-haired woman with a stethoscope around her neck and a voice that carried.

"Six years ago this young woman came to us as a student," she said. "Today she's our new senior nurse on the pediatric floor. Shelby?"
