"Ask," I said.
The line hissed.
Somebody in the background was shouting about a phone.
"When people ask where I am," Shelby said. "At the wedding. Somebody will."
"Probably."
"Don't say I'm sick. Don't say I'm away, or that it's complicated, or that I'm getting help."
"What do you want me to say?"
"The truth. That I'm in jail for what I did to a little boy."
Her voice wobbled and held.
"And for letting you pay for it. Say it plain, Holly. Like you would."
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Mom won't like it," I said.
"That's the other reason," my sister said.
For half a second she sounded nine years old.
"Okay," I said. "I'll say it plain."
"Thank you." She swallowed. "I have three minutes. Is she nice? The little girl?"
"She's bossy and she lies about vegetables."
Shelby laughed, wet, down the bad line.
"Good," she said. "That's good."
On the third Saturday in June it didn't rain.
Dot said it was because God owed her one.
She'd gotten ordained online in ten minutes and framed the certificate next to the health inspection.
