Chapter 13: Himari
Kanae put on her cloak and went out to her.
She did not wake Vorhaan.
She shut the stable door softly behind her, and they stood in the cold courtyard with the lantern between them and a hundred stars overhead.
The princess of Aoba looked like a ghost.
Her chestnut hair was matted, and her coat was torn at the cuff, and under her eyes were two dark bruises of sleeplessness.
"How did you get through the pickets?" Kanae said.
"I walked." Himari laughed, high and thin. "Nobody looks twice at a girl with a lantern. I told them I was a servant."
"Himari."
"I know." She wiped her face with the back of her wrist. "I know I shouldn't be here. I'm sorry. I didn't know where else to go."
"Is it Raizen?"
"He's bleeding."
She said it, and it hit Kanae that for her it was.
"The wound in his thigh won't close," Himari said. "It's been eleven days. The royal physician says the flesh has gone slack. He sleeps three hours a night. He wakes up shaking, and he's never been afraid of anything, and now he sits up with his sword across his knees and stares at the tent flap."
"I'm sorry."
"No, you're not." She said it almost kindly. "You shouldn't be."
