Chapter 16: Her Terms
Kanae let him up off the floor after ten minutes, and she made him wait until midnight.
She didn't do it to be cruel.
She was shaking with fury, and heartache, and something much hotter than either.
She needed to put those in order before she trusted herself.
She spent the afternoon in the stables healing a few last scratches, and the evening with Ishkra over a pot of tea.
Ishkra told her everything she knew about the Source.
Kanae wrote it down, in a column, in Ishkra's own ledger.
By the time the moon cleared the fort wall, she knew exactly what she wanted.
She went up the tower stairs to the General's room and shut the door behind her.
He was standing at the window.
He had washed and put on a clean shirt.
She knew from the line of his back that he had been standing there for hours.
"Take it off," she said.
He turned.
"The shirt. Take it off."
He did.
He stood in the candlelight with his chest bare, smooth grey skin over a hundred old scars.
There was not a trace of the Brand left on him.
She walked around him, slowly.
"Terms," she said.
"Yes, my lady."
She stopped in front of him.
"One. You tell me everything, the moment you know it, the moment it matters. Not when it's convenient."
"Yes."
"Two. What happens to the Source is my decision. Not the Lord's. Not the Legion's. Mine."
"Yes."
"Three." She put her hand flat on his bare chest, over his heart, and felt it pound. "You belong to me tonight. All of it. You will not touch me unless I say."
His breath went out of him.
His eyes, gold and enormous, never left her face.
