Chapter 17: The Gate

He stood alone in the gravel before the gate with his hands open at his sides.

There was no armor on him.

There was no sword at his hip.

He wore the plain linen shirt of a farmhand, and his hair had not been combed, and in the grey morning he looked about seventeen.

Four hundred demons lined the walls of Hollowgate above him, and not one of them had drawn a weapon.

They were watching to see what the Lady would do.

Kanae came down the gatehouse stairs with Vorhaan one step behind her, and Ishkra at her elbow with her ledger.

She stopped on the top step.

"Kanae," Raizen said.

His voice cracked on her name.

"You're a long way from your army," she said.

"I left them." He swallowed. "I left the sword, too. It's back in the tent. I wanted you to see I'm not armed."

"Why are you here?"

"The Archpriest told me." He looked at his hands. "Last night. I came as soon as I could stand."

"Came to do what?"

He lifted his head. "Kanae, I didn't know."

The gravel crunched under his boots.

He took one step toward the gate.

"I swear it. I swear on my life. I thought I was just... lucky. I thought it was the god's favor. They told me I was a Hero chosen for a time like this. Nobody told me I was taking anything from anyone."
