Chapter 24: The Lady of the Legion
They married in the Emberwaste, on the black slope above Hollowgate.
The pavilion was red silk, and it took the whole Legion three weeks to raise.
It was not the kind of wedding Kanae had ever imagined, back when she imagined weddings.
There was no church and no aisle.
There was a hillside full of demons in their best armor, with their horns polished and their spears wreathed in ash-lilies.
The sky was the color of banked coals.
Himari stood on Kanae's left in a green gown, with a posy of grey flowers.
Ishkra stood on her right, in a patched black coat with a clean ledger tucked under one arm, sniffling.
"I am not weeping," she said.
"I know."
"It is the smoke."
"There's no smoke."
"There is a great deal of smoke."
The Demon Lord had come herself.
She sat at the head of the pavilion on a throne of folded silk, small and ancient and unreadable.
Kanae came up the slope in her white robe with Ishkra's arm through hers, and the Lord raised one white-boned hand.
"Come forward, child."
Vorhaan was waiting.
He stood at the front of the pavilion in black dress armor with a red sash over one shoulder.
His horns had been oiled until they shone.
He watched her walk up the whole hillside.
She had never seen him so still.
When she reached him, his gold eyes were wet.
"You look," he said, very low, "like something I do not deserve."
"You're not allowed to say that."
"I am saying it."
"Say it again in an hour."
He laughed.
The Lord spoke the words.
They were short, in the old tongue, and Ishkra whispered a translation in Kanae's ear, and Kanae understood about half.
Something about the horn and the hand.
