Chapter 7: The Trial of Ash
The Ash Pit was a round arena sunk into the crater floor, with benches rising on all sides and a bed of grey cinders in the middle.
Two thousand demons sat above Kanae in the dawn light.
She stood on the cinders in her red silk dress with her wrists in iron cuffs, and every face looked down on her.
Vorhaan was not allowed in the ring.
He stood at the rail instead, and behind him the entire Ashen Legion had come down from Hollowgate overnight.
Four hundred demons in black stood in perfect silence with their spears grounded.
Nobody had ordered them to come.
Nobody had dared order them to leave.
The Lord sat above them in her high box, chin on her fist.
"The charge is poison," the Chancellor said.
He strode out into the ring in his collar of black feathers, savoring it.
"At the Lord's own table, a demon of the first rank was struck down by wraithroot.
"The woman beside him had been seen to take the cup from his hand.
"A vial of that very root was found this morning in her room."
He held it up, a little green glass bottle.
A groan went around the benches.
"I did not put that in my room," Kanae said.
"Naturally you deny it."
"I've been in that room for two nights. I'd have noticed a bottle of poison. I'm a bookkeeper. I notice when things are on the shelf."
A few demons laughed, and the Chancellor's mouth twisted.
"She was a spy for the Hero," he said. "She had the General in her bed. She had every reason to kill him before he recovered."
