Chapter 8: Keep Walking
They reached the Pass in four days of hard riding, and the first thing Kanae saw was the Kingdom's banner flying from Ashfall Fort.
White and gold, on a pole as tall as a tree.
Below it, the whole slope was covered with tents, and campfires, and men.
Ten thousand soldiers of Aoba had spread across the high ground.
Vorhaan reined in on the ridge and looked at them for a long time.
The Brand on his chest had shrunk to the size of a thumbprint, and he sat his horse.
"They hold the fort," Ishkra said beside them. "They hold the water. If we sit, they'll starve us out by winter."
"We won't sit."
"General, we are four hundred."
"We are four hundred and a healer."
Ishkra gave Kanae a long, doubtful look.
"I'm not a weapon," Kanae said.
"No," said Vorhaan. "You are something better. You make sure the rest of us come back."
Parley flags went up at noon.
Kanae rode out between the lines in her white robe, because Vorhaan had insisted she be seen, and Ishkra had insisted she be armored, and they had settled on a white robe over a chain shirt.
She stopped on the ridge in the middle of the dead ground, forty feet from the Kingdom's line.
Raizen came out to meet her alone.
He was limping.
That was the first thing she noticed.
His left leg was wrapped in stained bandages from hip to knee, and he walked with a stick he tried to hide in his cloak.
His face was still handsome, but there were lines in it she had never seen.
He looked ten years older than he had a week ago.
"Kanae."
His whole face lit up.
"Kanae, thank the gods. You're alive. We thought..." He took a step toward her. "We were so afraid. After what happened. We looked for you."
"For three days," she said.
