Chapter 13: Answer

I stepped out in front of Rhys and into the headlights.

Gravel bit into my bare feet.

Behind me a dozen Huddleston wolves stopped where they stood.

In front of me forty Kippax wolves went quiet, because the girl they had called hollow was standing in a man's coat with silver eyes.

"Two weeks ago you threw me off your land before moonrise," I said to the Alpha. "In front of a hundred of these people."

"A father's temper," he said. "Words said on a hard night."

"You said them with your hands behind your back and my mother nodding at you."

A murmur ran down the line of trucks.

The Alpha smiled, patient, and turned so that every wolf in the glare could hear him.

"Pack Kippax," he said. "Huddleston pack. I owe you all a truth I kept for eighteen years, for the girl's own safety."

I felt Rhys go still behind me.

"This child was found on the north road as a newborn, wrapped in a blanket, with the mark of the Moonblood on her hip. I took her in. I fed her, housed her and raised her in my pack. A foundling belongs to the pack that raised her, and that is old law."

"Moonblood," someone said, near the trucks, in a hush.

"She was not hollow," the Alpha said. "She was asleep, and I kept her so, until she was strong enough to wake. I did it to protect her from men like this one."

He pointed at Rhys.

It was a good speech.

It almost worked on the back rows, I could see it working, and my stomach turned over.
