Chapter 6: Participation

His office was at the top of the old library annex, up a spiral stair that smelled of dust and cedar.

I didn't knock.

He was standing at the window with his back to the door and his satchel still on the desk.

"Close the door," he said.

"No."

He turned.

His face was very calm, which told me how much it cost him.

"What did he mean?" I said. "Dalton. How long you've known who I am."

"Sit down, Sierra."

"I'll stand."

"Then stand."

He crossed the room and stopped in front of me, a careful arm's length away, exactly where he had stopped in the lecture hall.

"You have a right to the whole truth," he said. "I'm going to give it to you, but not like this. You've been sick for three days and you've just been grabbed on a lawn by a boy who hurt you."

"He didn't hurt me."

"Your sleeve is torn, and your arm is cut where he held it."

I looked down.

Four faint red crescents, from his fingernails.

I hadn't felt them.

"You think I'm too fragile for the truth," I said.

"I think you're furious, and you should be."

"I am."

"Good," he said. "Be furious. Just not at me yet."

That was the wrong thing to say.

Everything in me that had gone quiet for eighteen years stood up at once.

I had been given tea in the morning and orders in the evening, and I had said yes to all of it.
