Chapter 14: Uncut

The director's editing room was a basement with no windows, six monitors, forty years of film cans, and a kettle crusted white with scale.

"Sit anywhere," said the director. "Not there. Those are originals."

Tang sat on a stack of cans.

Shen stood against the wall with his arms crossed.

Cheng Ping took the only chair, set her phone on the console, and plugged it into the director's speakers.

"Three years ago, the Haitang Room," she said.

"I record every producer dinner. Habit. It's saved clients from three lawsuits," said Cheng Ping.

"The club also records its private rooms, which is how Wei Chuan got his copy. But his copy has been trimmed."

She pressed play.

The sound filled the basement, clear and full, with all the clinking glasses and the low laughter of men with money.

It began before the cut.

"Gentlemen," said the investor, "I believe our young idol is bored. Qiu, is he bored?"

"He's never bored," said a smooth, familiar voice.

"He'll do whatever you ask. He's twenty-four, he's got a father in the hospital."

"He has seven years left on my contract. Ask him anything."

Tang went completely still.

"Sit down, pretty boy," said the investor. "Sing something for the table."

There was a pause, and a rustle, and a heavy envelope sliding on a cloth.
