Chapter 18: Interval
The VIP suite on the third floor of the Harbor Theatre had a wall of glass and a long white sofa.
The bar had not been touched, and a television on mute showed the empty stage.
Twenty minutes of interval.
Tang Mo locked the door and stood with his back against it.
Shen Yichen was at the window, with both hands pressed flat to the glass and his head down.
"You're shaking," said Tang.
"I know," said Shen.
"It was a good first half," said Tang.
"Everyone in that room is looking at me," said Shen, to the glass. "Nine million people think I'm a liar."
He stopped.
"And in forty minutes I have to go on a stage and say the truth into a microphone."
"You've done it once," said Tang.
"Once, in an arena, for a reason," said Shen.
His shoulders were rigid.
"I don't know how to do it on purpose."
Tang crossed the room.
He put a hand on the back of Shen's neck, and felt the tension there, hard and hot.
"Distract me," said Shen, without turning. "I can't think. I can't do anything. Please."
