Chapter 23: Terms
The agreement was in the kitchen drawer, under the takeaway menus, folded in three.
Tang Mo found it at nine in the morning, looking for a pair of chopsticks.
The sun was coming in flat and white across the long counter.
He unfolded it.
It was two pages on Hengyue letterhead.
Both agencies had signed it.
It was the whole ninety days in dry numbered clauses, the dinners, the carpets, the fan meeting.
It had the exit date and the reasons for it, with a tidy line at the bottom for each name.
Shen Yichen came in barefoot, in a grey T-shirt, and stopped.
"You kept it," said Tang.
"Cheng Ping gave me the copy on the first day," said Shen.
"You kept it in a drawer," said Tang.
"I didn't know where else to put it," said Shen.
Shen's ears had begun to redden.
"I read it twice. I may have read it more."
"Teacher Shen," said Tang.
"Yes?" said Shen.
"It's very badly drafted. Clause nine says no emotional involvement. It says it twice," said Tang.
"I noticed," said Shen.
"You violated it on the second day," said Tang.
