Chapter 10: The Nurse Who Wrote the Letter
Marin's POV
The nurse who wrote the confession lived in a trailer behind a closed gas station, three hours north of the lake.
Leander had found her by lunch. The tea was clean, so he went looking for who had started the story.
Leander had been quiet the whole drive, like a man deciding something. I let him.
She sat in a recliner with an oxygen tube under her nose and a plaid blanket over her knees.
She was very old. Her eyes were clear.
"You're the Ashcroft girl," she said before I spoke. "I saw you on the news."
"Did you write a letter to my family?"
She looked at the window for a while.
"I wrote what I was given," she said.
I pulled a kitchen chair close and sat. Leander stayed by the door.
"No babies were switched on my ward," she said. "I worked that floor for thirty years. Nobody was switched. Not that night, not any night."
"Then why would you write it?"
"A woman came to see me in the spring."
My hands went cold.
"Blonde. Pearls. Very kind." She coughed, and the tube shook. "She said a family needed closure about a long-ago mistake. She brought me a letter already typed. All I had to do was sign it."
