Chapter 15: The Prefect
The prefect of Jingzhao came through the moon gate with a napkin still tucked in his belt.
He was a round man with tired eyes, and he had been eating the Marquis's duck when they dragged him out.
"Your lordship," he said. "What is the trouble?"
"Armed men are holding my mother prisoner in her own court," the Marquis said.
"We are standing in a gate," said the one-armed man.
"And this woman led them." The Marquis pointed at Ruyun. "She was sentenced to three years at Ironwall for passing herself off as my daughter. She has no right to enter this house."
"I served the sentence," Ruyun said.
"It was a family judgment, and it is done. She came back to rob an old woman who is not in her wits."
The prefect looked at the gray coat and the soldiers behind it.
He looked at the lamps in the Grand Princess's windows.
"Your lordship, a family judgment is a family matter."
"But a sentence served is a sentence served, and I cannot arrest a woman for walking home."
He cleared his throat.
"Is Her Highness able to speak?"
"I am," said a dry voice.
The maids had carried the Grand Princess out in a chair with a quilt over her knees.
She had put on her purple robe and the jade pin, and she held her cane across her lap like a sword.
The whole yard went down on its knees, the prefect first.
"Get up, man, you will ruin your hose," she said. "Hongde, stand where I can see you."
The Marquis stood.
"Prefect, I make a plain complaint," she said. "Three years ago a bowl of water was used to send my granddaughter to a frozen camp. I was not allowed to see how it was filled."
