Chapter 12: Not a Werner

First Heartland Bank opened at nine, and Odile Werner was already sitting in the lobby.

She had a chair by the window, a cup of tea, and a lawyer on each side of her.

She stood when she saw me.

"Maisie," she said warmly. "And Jerome. What a surprise."

"No, it isn't," I said.

I had the brass key in my coat pocket, and I closed my hand on it.

How had she known?

Jerome stepped in front of me by half a pace.

"Odile," he said. "Jerome Werner. Say what you came to say."

"Still doing the name thing. Frank's habit." She smiled. "I came to say that you're both very tired, and that this has gone far enough."

The lawyer on her left opened a folder.

"Jerome," she said. "I've had a seat held for you."

He didn't move.

"Your old chair on the board. Your shares restored, and a payment on top of them. Twenty million, for the years you were treated unfairly." She said it with real sympathy. "That was my mistake. I let your father's grief make me hard on you."

I looked at Jerome.

His face gave me nothing.

"All you have to do," Odile said, "is walk the girl to the vault, step back and let my people handle the box. She'll be looked after. She'll be very comfortable."

A bank officer behind the counter had stopped pretending to type.

Two customers at the ATM had turned around.

"Twenty million," Jerome said.

"And your name back."

"Odile."

"Yes, darling."

"You called the police about the grave at five in the morning." He said it clearly, in a voice that carried. "The caretaker found it at six. What time did your men finish digging?"
