Chapter 24: Mrs. Werner, Not Mrs. Conway
The county records office was exactly as I remembered it, down to the water fountain.
The clerk was behind the same counter in the same cardigan, with the same mug that said World's Okayest Grandma.
"Honey," she said. "I heard I'd retired."
"I heard that too."
"I'll retire when they carry me out." She took off her glasses and let them hang on their chain. "Name?"
"Maisie Corrigan."
"Mm-hm. I remember you. You married a name."
"I'm trying to marry a man."
Jerome stood beside me in a dark suit, with his scar and his gray temples and one finger tucked under his collar.
"Jerome Werner," he said, before she could ask.
"Sit down, both of you. This is going to be a real one."
We had a short wait, and two witnesses.
One was the caretaker, in a clean shirt, holding his cap.
The other was the gray-haired director, who had insisted on coming.
She had brought a thermos of tea and a small bunch of yellow daisies, and she pressed the daisies into my hands.
The clerk led us to a little room with a table and a flag.
She read the ID I put on the desk, and then the one Jerome put beside it, and she typed for a long time.
"I've got a Maisie Corrigan, born in this county, twenty-nine years old," she said, over the top of the monitor. "I've got a Jerome Werner, thirty-seven. Both of you are in the system, both of you are real, and neither of you is married. Isn't that nice."
