Chapter 13: What Gina Left
"Vince Lucchesi is my son," Ottavio said again, softer, as if the room had missed it.
Nobody in the room had missed it.
Sixty people held their forks over the veal and did not breathe.
Behind Carmine's shoulder I could see Vince's face.
It had gone the color of the tablecloth.
"Dad," he said.
He did not say it to Ottavio.
He said it to the back of Carmine's suit.
Carmine did not turn around.
"You came to my wedding to say that," he said to Ottavio, very quietly.
"I came to give my boy his name."
"You came to put a knife in him in front of sixty witnesses."
Ottavio smiled and leaned on his wolf-headed cane.
"Ask him if it is a lie, Vincenzo."
Vince looked at Carmine's back for a long time.
Carmine said nothing, and that was the answer, and everyone at the long tables knew it.
Vince made a sound I had never heard a grown man make.
He shoved his chair into the wall and walked out through the kitchen, and the back door banged.
Serafina took one step after him and stopped.
She looked at Ottavio, and then at me, and then at the floor.
For once she had nothing to say.
"Sit down, Ottavio," Carmine said.
"Finish your wine, since you asked for it."
"Then get out of my house, and take your goddaughter."
The oldest man of the Table had risen without anyone noticing.
His ears stuck out.
He stared at Ottavio with a look I would not have wanted pointed at me.
"A man comes to a wedding to wound a boy," he said. "I'll remember it at the vote."
Ottavio's smile slipped for the first time all night.
He left with his cane tapping and his men falling in behind him.
Teo cleared the room in six minutes flat.
He did it with a cup of seeds in one hand and "Thank you, goodnight, there's cake in the car" on his lips.
When the last guest was gone, Carmine stood alone in the empty dining room with his hand on the back of a chair.
I put my arms around him from behind.
