Chapter 7: The Back Seat
The car door shut, and the glass between us and Teo slid up with a soft electric hum.
"Home, boss?" Teo said through the speaker.
"Take the long way," said Carmine. "Lake Shore."
"Lake Shore it is."
The partition closed.
It was a long black car with leather seats and a bar built into the door.
Carmine sat with one arm along the back of the seat and the other hand loosening his tie.
He was looking out of the window.
"Serafina followed you into the powder room," he said.
"She did."
"She watched my face for an hour afterward to see whether it worked."
His jaw worked once.
"Gina's car went off Lake Shore Drive in a rainstorm at two in the morning," he said, quietly.
"I identified her. It was an accident."
"The police, the coroner and my own people all agreed."
"Then what is Ottavio holding?"
"A lie, built to bury me."
He turned his head.
"I should have told you myself. I will, all of it, I promise. But not tonight."
"Why not tonight?"
"Because tonight I'm thinking about only one thing, and it's not Gina."
His eyes dropped to my dress.
Slowly, down the green silk, to the knees, and up again.
The lights of the Drive slid across his face.
"Come here," he said.
I didn't have to be told twice.
I hiked the skirt of the dress to my hips.
I climbed into his lap with a knee on either side of his thighs.
The silk rode up to my waist.
I was bare underneath.
I had stripped off my ruined underwear in the powder room and thrown it away.
