Chapter 22: Mabel

Wick stood in the pale rectangle where she'd been.

He crouched down and put his hand flat in the dirt.

The old man had welded her with him.

He'd pulled her out of a burning building with his own back on fire.

"Wick," I said.

"She weighs nine thousand pounds." His voice was very calm. "You don't hide nine thousand pounds in a garage. You need a yard with a gate."

"The commissary."

He looked up at me.

"Hal heard me say the boy closed the firebox," he said. "And four hours later he took the one thing I got out of that building."

I had my phone out already.

I took a picture of the cut padlock in the gravel.

I posted it with one line.

SOMEBODY TOOK MABEL. 1,000-GALLON BLACK OFFSET, WELDED BY HAND, BURN MARKS ON THE FIREBOX. IF YOU SEE HER, CALL ME.

The fire captain saw it at seven-fifteen.

At eight-ten he sent a photo, taken from his car.

A long chain-link fence in the East Bottoms, with razor wire on top.

KIMBROUGH'S BAR-B-Q. COMMISSARY. DELIVERIES IN REAR.

And behind the fence, parked between two refrigerated trucks, Mabel.
