Chapter 24: Uncle

Wick came out of the kitchen doorway.

The dog came with him and stood in front of his knees, stiff-legged, not barking.

Brice looked at the dog.

Then at his uncle.

"I won't stay long," he said.

Wick didn't answer him.

He looked at me instead.

"You all right with him here?" he said.

Brice's eyes went from Wick to me and back again.

He'd never seen anybody ask me anything.

"Out back," I said. "Not at my counter."

So they went out to the yard.

Lorrie and I stood at the back door, in the dark of the kitchen, where we could hear.

Wick sat on his overturned bucket by Mabel's firebox.

Brice stood for a while.

Then he sat on the other bucket, the one I always used.

The train went by behind the lot, long and slow, and they waited for it.

"She told you," Brice said when it was gone. "About the latch."

"She told me."

"I remember it was hot." Brice turned his right hand over and looked at his thumb. "I had a blister for a week. I used to press on it when Dad talked about the fire. Like I could make it say something."
