Chapter 25: The Waste
We went out under the lintel at noon, while the whole city was listening to Laleh scream at the west gate.
The old gatekeeper was asleep on his stool in the shade.
Tamir stopped under the carved words and looked up at them.
"Don't," I said. "Read it on the way back."
He came.
The heat hit us a hundred steps out, where the road stops.
By the first cairn he'd drunk a quarter of his skin.
I took it off his shoulder.
"Hey."
"Four swallows," I said. "Then you wait until I say."
"I'm thirsty."
"You'll be thirstier tomorrow. And the day after that, you'll be dead and I'll have to drag you."
"I'm the Sultan of Qaresh."
"Out here you're a tall man in a hat, sweating out water we don't have."
He opened his mouth.
Then he shut it and held out his hand, and I gave him back the skin.
He drank four swallows, counting them out loud, and stoppered it.
At the foot of the cairn the sand had a shallow dip in it, smoothed by three months of wind.
