Chapter 28: First Water
The salt riders drove their iron bars into the mortar on either side of the post.
It crumbled.
"Together," said the eldest son.
They heaved.
The post groaned in the wall, and dust ran out around it, and then it came free with a crack.
The chain went slack and slithered off the spokes onto the floor.
The padlock hit the stone with the Marun mark face down.
Tamir and the captain took the wheel.
Two salt riders took the other side.
It didn't move.
Then it did, an inch, with a shriek of old iron.
Water spat through the bottom of the gate across our feet, ice cold.
Another inch. Another.
Then the mountain shoved, and the gate went up on its own, and the whole channel filled with roaring.
We ran up the sluice house stair with the water thundering under us.
The captain unbarred the door at the top.
Daylight. Drums. A whole city's noise.
The sluice square was packed from wall to wall.
People stood on the cistern lids and the window ledges and each other's shoulders.
In the middle stood the great stone basin of First Water, dry and cracked, with a platform built over its rim.
On the platform sat the council, the court ladies, and a broad man in an oiled leather coat with a gold cuff.
