Chapter 5: Ask Me Tomorrow

His bedroom was at the end of the north hall, behind a pair of tall oak doors, and I walked through them without knocking.

Every lamp in the room was lit.

There was a sleigh bed with black sheets, a fireplace, and a wall of windows full of harbor.

A man stood at the foot of the bed with his shirt unbuttoned at the throat.

Donovan turned around.

"It's after three," I said. "It's tomorrow."

"So it is."

"I'm asking."

He didn't smile.

He looked at me for a long moment.

I felt that look move over my whole body.

"Come here," he said.

I crossed the room.

When I reached him he took my face in one big hand and tilted it up.

He kissed me the way he had in the car, only slower.

I grabbed his shirt in both fists.

He walked me backward until my knees hit the bed.

He turned me with his hands on my hips and drew the zipper of my green velvet gown down my back, one slow inch at a time.

"You're slow," I said.

"I know."

"I'd like you to stop being slow."

"No," he said, against my neck, and I shivered so hard that he felt it.

He pushed the velvet off my shoulders and let it fall.

His hands went over my bare back, my ribs, my breasts.

His thumbs found my nipples through the lace and circled them until I was gripping the bedpost.

I said his name in a voice I didn't know I owned.

"Donovan."

"Again."

"Donovan, please."

He turned me around and laid me on the black sheets.

He stood looking down at me in nothing but a bra and panties, with the lamps bright on every inch.

"I want to see you," he said, rough. "I want every light on, so I see all of you."

"Then look."

He took the rest of my clothes off.
