Chapter 17: The New Moon
Both packs stood on the shore at Marrow Bay, and the moon had not yet cleared the water.
Lake Shore's eighty wolves held the north side of the ring, and Westpoint's sixty stood opposite with their arms crossed.
The envoy waited between them in his grey coat.
Ambrose leaned on a driftwood log behind me, pale as milk, with a flask of the butcher's blood in his hand.
Caleb stood at the edge of the sand with the red-bearded enforcer on his knees at his feet, bound at the wrists.
Nolan walked into the ring with a long dark blade at his hip.
"Lilia Hedlund," said the envoy.
"My writ was delivered. The claim, or the challenge."
"You can't have both."
Sixty Westpoint wolves watched me.
I turned and looked at Caleb.
He did not move his hands or open his mouth.
His face said that this part was mine.
"I give the shield back," I said, and my voice rang across the stones.
"Westpoint's protection ends tonight. I'm a Lake Shore wolf, and I stand on my own."
