My phone rang before I reached the bookstore doorway.
It was a number from Back Bay that I hadn't seen in a year.
"Hallie, dear?" said a thin, steady voice. "It's the old woman across the street, from number forty-one."
"I'm sorry to bother you. There are men carrying your grandmother's piano out of her front door."
The sidewalk tilted under me.
"Is Lawson there?"
"He's standing on the steps with a coffee, supervising."
I looked up at Ephraim.
He had heard every word.
"Marlborough Street," I said. "Now."
"The car is around the corner," he said, and for once he didn't explain whose car.
A gray sedan with a quiet driver took us across the Public Garden.
I kept my hands flat on my knees the whole way.
"I'm going to ask you something hard," I said.
"Ask."
"Don't fix it. Stand behind me and let me do it."
His jaw worked.
"Behind you," he said.
"Behind me."
