The text came to Ephraim's phone on Saturday morning, while I was reading the forfeiture notice for the ninth time.
He read it at the counter and turned it to me.
"Name a place. Alone. We should talk like men."
It was from an unknown number, and we both knew whose.
"No," I said.
"Hallie."
"You work for me. You don't leave my side when Lawson's in the room."
"He isn't in the room yet."
"Then I'll be in it before he arrives."
He studied me for a long moment.
"The Aldine bar," he said. "Four o'clock."
"Why there?"
"Because he'll think it's a joke," Ephraim said. "He likes jokes that are on you."
The bar looked the way it had a week ago Thursday, dim and brass, with a bartender polishing glasses.
I sat on a stool at the far end with a club soda and a sketchbook.
I wasn't hiding.
I only wanted to be in the room.
Ephraim took the corner table, the one I had taken that night, with his back to the wall.
