I made it to the sidewalk before I could breathe.
The awning dripped over the Aldine's front door.
The rain had started again, thin and cold, the same rain as that first Thursday.
I heard the door open behind me.
"Hallie."
"Don't."
"Let me-"
"A quarter of a million dollars," I said, without turning. "That's the number. I wondered what it would be."
"Hallie, listen."
"He said it, and you took it, and you said 'done,' the way you said it to me."
I turned around.
He was standing under the awning with the check still in his hand.
His face was open, and not at all guilty, and that made me angrier.
"Is that what you do?" I said. "Somebody pays you, and you leave?"
"No."
"Then what was that?"
"A trap," he said. "A better one than his."
