Chapter 5: The Key

Lawson stood in my doorway in a camel coat with a travel mug in his hand, looking at the bed.

I sat up and pulled the sheet to my chin.

Ephraim was awake before I was.

He was on his feet in the gray light with the blanket low on his hips.

One arm was already out.

"Hal," Lawson said, in the voice he used at restaurants when the wine was wrong. "You've been busy."

"How did you get in?"

"The landlord. I co-signed your lease, remember? Emergency contact."

He dangled a key from one finger.

"I was in the neighborhood. I wanted to talk about tonight."

"At seven in the morning."

"I didn't know you'd have company."

His eyes slid to Ephraim, over his bare chest, the scar, and the gray suit trousers on the floor.

A small smile came onto his face.

"So this is the friend," he said.

"Get out of my apartment, Lawson."

"I'm just being polite."

He stepped inside and shut the door with his heel.

"Hello. I'm Lawson Gaines. I was married to her. What do you do, pal?"

"Logistics," said Ephraim.

"Logistics." Lawson laughed. "Let me guess. You drive something."

"Sometimes."

"And what does she pay you? Is it an hourly rate?"

My stomach dropped.

He couldn't know.

I'd told no one but Wynn, and I'd barely finished telling her.

Ephraim didn't flinch.

He reached down, picked up his shirt, and began to button it, one button at a time, without hurrying.

"Ask her," he said.
