Chapter 13: Four Years

The room made no sound for three full seconds.

Then four hundred people began talking at once.

Phones rose along the back wall.

Ansel turned from the table and walked down the steps without looking at me.

He cut straight through the crowd, and the crowd opened for him the way it had opened for me.

I stood on the stage with my father three feet away.

He had the face of a man watching a dish come out of the kitchen exactly as ordered.

"Sweetheart," he said, too low for the microphone. "Come down. Let them talk."

I picked up the half card from the white cloth.

It was still warm from his hand.

I did not answer my father.

I went after Ansel.

The car park behind the club was cold and nearly empty, with the valet lamps humming over wet asphalt.

He stood beside his car with both hands flat on the roof and his head down.

"Ansel."

"Not yet."

"You said four years."

"I know what I said."

He did not turn around.

"Everyone asks about the fire," he said. "Nobody has ever asked me about the center."
