Chapter 15: Count With Me

Rowan's car came up the drive at dusk, and I was waiting for it in the rose garden.

Margaret had texted him. She told me so herself, and she said she would not apologize.

Then she took Biscuit inside and shut the kitchen door, and I could see her through the window pretending to wash a clean pot.

Rowan got out in his brunch suit with the tie gone.

He walked up the gravel path slowly, and he stopped a long step away from me.

"Mr. Aldous signed nothing," he said. "I left when I'd said what I came to say."

"Good."

"I'm here because you're here."

"Say it," I said.

"Say what?"

"What your mother told me in her kitchen."

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked at the roses and not at me.

"I was told at thirty-one that I'd almost certainly never have a child," he said. "I was in a hospital bed. I told her, and my doctor, and nobody else."

"You told me in an elevator that there wouldn't be an heir."

"Yes."

"And you didn't tell me why."

"You were a stranger. It was none of your business."

"I stopped being a stranger," I said, "about the time you put your mouth on my stomach."

He flinched.

I was shaking, and I held on to the edge of a rose trellis until it stopped.

"I asked you for one thing," I said. "In that elevator, you had four rules, and I added one. You never lie to me about anything that matters."

"I haven't lied."

"You said it to a room of forty people. It's mine. You believed it wasn't."

"I said it for you."

"I know you did." My voice cracked, and I let it. "That's the worst part. You didn't ask me one question first. Not whose, not when, not what I wanted. You moved a desk."
