Chapter 18: The Release
Two hundred pale faces turned toward Winnie and her clipboard.
No human had ever walked onto this roof.
Winnie waved her pen at them.
"The banquet manager owed me a favor," she told me, afterward.
"He owed me thirty years of pie."
Thaddeus Manigault came across the gravel with his cane, and the Court parted for him.
"Mrs. Greaves," he said. "You have mistaken the hotel."
"I've mistaken nothing. Miss Ravenel has a right to a witness's table at a vigil, and this is her table."
She slapped the tablecloth off the laundry cart.
The stone sat in the lamplight, dull and grey, with its rust-colored shadow and its curve of dark glass.
A murmur ran through the ranks.
Someone had remembered what an oath is made of.
"What is that?" Manigault said, very quietly.
"Calder Street," I said.
I had stepped out of the cage and turned Pippa's key behind me.
Now I stood next to my stone with my yellow slicker zipped to the chin.
"You ripped up its floor with a jackhammer, so I brought it with me."
"The Compact does not recognize..."
