Chapter 17: The Challenge

The silver rope lay on the lodge floor in its twelve-foot ring, and the whole pack stood around it at dawn.

I stood at the edge, in the same green velvet from the gala.

It was the only clean dress I had brought to the lodge.

My shoulder was stiff under a bandage Opal had taped on.

The bite had stopped bleeding sometime in the night.

Under the gauze it felt warm and strange.

The three Alphas of the Council sat on a bench by the fireplace.

"A challenge to the Alpha is answered once," the woman from the lake country said. "No weapon enters the ring. No wolf interferes."

"The challenged may yield. The challenger may yield."

"If neither yields, one of them is carried out."

Alden stepped over the rope in his shirtsleeves.

He had left his overcoat and the long case with the lodge's keeper, and his hands hung empty at his sides.

He looked tired and very old.

Mathias came in barefoot, in jeans and nothing else.

The burns on his chest were nearly gone.

He did not look at me, because he was already looking at the man in front of him.
