Chapter 18: The Beta's Fall
At noon the lodge hall was so full that people stood on the stairs.
Alden stood in the silver ring with his hands bound in front of him, in the same torn shirt.
His son and daughter stood on the other side of the rope.
They had been told they could sit with him, and neither had.
The woman from the lake country spoke first.
"This is an open hearing," she said. "The pack may hear every charge, and the accused may answer each."
"Read them."
Alden's daughter read the first, the regency order, and her voice did not shake.
"The Beta planned the Alpha's loss."
"I did not plan it," Alden said. "I prepared for it. Someone had to."
"The Alpha had no mate and no heir, and he walked out into the street."
"You told him he had to marry your daughter," Opal said from her chair. "Where is the preparing in that?"
He said nothing.
The daughter read the second, the wrecking of my shop, and her brother stepped forward before the Council could ask.
"I did it," he said. "My father told me to, and I did it, and I'd have done worse."
"I scrubbed the door because the Alpha made me. I'm here because I wanted to."
