Chapter 19: The Tower

The boardroom of Ardrey Holdings took up the whole fortieth floor of the tower.

Its table was black glass, and the board sat around it in dark suits.

I walked in at nine sharp with a bucket of white ranunculus on my hip and Mathias at my side.

"Sit anywhere," the chairman of the board said, without looking up. "This is a private meeting."

"I'm his wife," I said. "I'll stand."

I set the bucket down in the middle of the table and took out one stem at a time.

I laid a flower in front of each of them.

Nobody said a word.

The chairman was a silver-haired man with a signet ring and a tight face.

"Mr. Ardrey," he said, and folded his hands. "Nineteen days."

"No call, no statement, no signature on the quarterly accounts. The stock dropped four points."

"We have discussed the situation at length with counsel."

He slid a stapled document across the glass.

It was the will, the one that took effect on the day Mathias was no longer himself.

"It's dated the day you left," the chairman said. "It makes a person wonder what you intended."

"We don't believe you are fit to lead six thousand people."

"And frankly, a hasty marriage to a flower seller does not add confidence."

I felt Mathias go still beside me.
