Chapter 6: Guest Right
Guest right is the oldest law the packs share.
A host may not raise a hand to a guest under his roof, and a guest may not draw blood in the host's hall.
Conrad opened his doors to my father, because the law left him no choice.
I came down the stairs in a borrowed grey sweater with my arm bandaged, and I stood at the back of the Blackmere hall.
Conrad sat at the head of a long oak table.
Twenty of his elders sat along both sides, and my father stood in front of them in his wet coat with his hat in his hand.
Daphne stood a step behind him, still in the white gown, with a Greywater shawl over her shoulders.
She had cried so hard her eyes were red.
She looked young and heartbroken, and every Blackmere elder looked at her with pity.
"Alpha Mallory," my father said. "I come as a father and as an ally. My family has made a terrible mistake today."
"Say what you want," said Conrad.
"The contract is signed. Greywater ink cannot be unsigned. If you refuse the bride, you break the treaty between our packs, and the Northern Passes go undefended this winter."
A murmur ran around the elders.
"I'll offer you more," my father went on, smoothly. "Greywater's wolves will patrol your southern border for five years. You take Daphne tonight, and the rogue daughter, who has caused all this trouble, is no one's business at all."
He did not look at me.
Daphne did.
She moved to the table and took Conrad's hand in both of hers before he could pull it back.
