Chapter 17: The Village Comes Up

By the time Riko had pulled her clothes on, the lanterns had reached the gate.

There were hundreds of them, swinging on poles and in hands, and under each one was a face she knew.

Teruko stood at the front in her blue headcloth with a huge iron pan under one arm.

Behind her came the twenty women with the knives, then the farmers, then the old men from the tea shop.

Last came the children, asleep on their fathers' shoulders.

Every one of them had a basket, a sack or a pot.

Kagiro came down the stairs behind Riko in a half-buttoned robe with his hair still wet.

He stopped on the top step of the courtyard, and the whole crowd went quiet.

Riko had seen that look on his face once before, at the harvest supper.

It was the look of a man who expected to be told to leave.

"Lord Kurosumi," said Teruko, in her carrying market voice.

"We heard what happened at your table."

"I am aware of it."

"So did every cow in the valley. We came to say something."
