The cottage at 14 Marsh Hen Lane was a small white house with a screen porch and a swing.
I had paid its rent for fourteen months from a tent.
In the first gray light, a woman was sitting on that swing with a cardigan around her shoulders.
Myra stopped her truck at the end of the lane.
"I'll be right here," she said. "If you want me, hit the horn."
"I won't need it."
"Then don't be a martyr about it."
I walked up the path.
Dixon's new lock gleamed on the door, and the porch smelled of wet leaves and salt.
Brynn didn't stand.
Nine days after labor, she looked like she had been taken apart and reassembled by someone in a hurry.
Her hair was in a loose braid.
She wore flat shoes and no makeup, and she held a ring on her open palm.
It was the small stone I had set on the front pew.
"The usher gave it to me after the wedding," she said. "I've had it in my pocket for three weeks."
