Chapter 21: The Blood Challenge

Orla's POV

I walked out of the cabin with the ring on my thumb and my mother's hand on my back.

Garrick stood at the gate with the torches behind him, and he did not look like a man who had been up all night.

He looked like a man who had slept very well.

"Orla Harrow," he said. "The call was made. The third night is tonight. You answer it, or the pack hears that you ran."

"I'm coming."

"Then come."

I went through the gate, and Cade fell in a step behind my right shoulder.

The beta walked beside Garrick with the parchment tucked against his chest.

I did not look at him.

We climbed the old ground in a silent column as the sky went from black to grey.

The standing stones ringed the flat ground at the top.

Two hundred wolves filled the hill.

I saw the baker, and the boy who carried wood, and the bus driver who had never once looked at me.

I saw the guards who had stood at the north bedroom door.

I saw Melody at the back of the crowd, wrapped in a cloak, with her head down.

"The law is read," the beta said, and his voice shook just a little. "A blood challenge is decided by the combatants and witnessed by the pack. Before it begins, the pack turns its eyes."

"What does that mean?" I asked quietly.

"The wolves choose," my mother said at my elbow. "They lower their eyes to the one they follow. They don't have to say a word."
