Chapter 23: The Pack Decides

I changed back on my knees in the grass, and I did not care who saw.

"Hester!"

She was already there with her sleeves pushed up and a small grey tin in her fist.

"Out with the knife," she said. "Rose, hold his shoulders. Orla, press here, hard."

I put both hands over the hole under his ribs.

My hands shook.

Hester pulled the blade, and the blood came dark and silver-shot.

She tipped the tin and packed the wound with grey powder.

I stared at it.

"That's silverroot."

"It was made to draw silver out of a wolf's blood," Hester said, without looking up. "My mother was the pack healer. It was never meant for coffee."

My mother flinched, and kept her hands where they were.

The grey shine in the blood faded.

It faded slowly, thread by thread, until what ran between my fingers was only red.

Cade's chest rose.

"He'll live," Hester said. "He'll want to die for a week, but he'll live."

I breathed again.

Then I stood, in Hester's shawl, with Cade's blood on my arms.

Garrick lay where I had left him, with his broken wrist in his lap and six of his own warriors holding him by the shoulders.

The pack waited.

I heard my own voice go out over the hill, steady and low.

"Beta."

He came forward.

He kept his eyes on the grass.

"Where did the silverroot in my mother's apron come from?"

"I found it there."

"Melody."

She stood at the back with her cloak around her, and she took a full minute to speak.

"I gave it to him," she said, in a tiny voice. "He asked me where Rose kept the tins. I told him. I took one from the pantry and gave it to him. He put it in her apron."
