Chapter 4: What Mom Hid

I waited until supper was over and the dishes were dry.

My mother sat down in her chair by the stove with a mug of tea. I put the tin jar on the table in front of her.

She looked at it, and her face went very still.

"Where did you find that?"

"Behind the flour in Hester's pantry." I kept my voice level. "It smells like my coffee, Mom."

"It's a tonic."

"For what?"

"Omegas run hot at eighteen," she said. "It keeps the fever down."

"Then why isn't every omega in the pack drinking it?"

She did not answer.

"Why did you pour it in my cup every morning for as long as I can remember?" I said. "And every night."

"Orla."

"My wolf didn't speak to me until Monday night." My voice shook, and I let it. "Every girl in school had her wolf by thirteen. I thought something was wrong with me."

My mother set down her mug.

Her hands were trembling, and she pressed them flat against the table to stop them.

"Nothing is wrong with you," she said. "It was never that."

"Then what?"

"Sit down, baby."

I sat. She took a long time.

"Your father did not leave us," she said. "I told you he was a rogue who ran, because that was easier for a child to hear. It was a lie."
