Chapter 15: What She Knew
Nolan's POV
I read the whole thread standing up.
There were nine messages in it, and Freja had written four.
The first was Brooks, on the twentieth, asking her to tell me.
The second was Freja, that same afternoon.
"I can't do it before the gala. The pledge needs her, and so does my payroll. Give me until the check clears."
The coffee in my hand had gone cold without my noticing.
"Nolan," Freja said from behind me. "I was going to tell you this morning. I had the coffee on."
"I saw the pot."
"I'll say it all, if you'll sit."
"I don't want to sit."
I put the mug on the table.
She stood with her arms at her sides and did not reach for me, and she did not cry.
I had not expected that.
"On day two," I said, "a man told you my fiancée was lying about him."
"Yes."
"And you said nothing to me for two weeks."
"Yes."
"For two million dollars."
"For twelve beds." Her voice was level. "And for two million dollars, yes. I'm not going to pretend I didn't do the sums. I did them in front of him."
"I stood next to you at the boat dinner."
"I know."
"I told you she was honest, and you said nothing."
"I know what I said."
"You let me say it."
"I did."
I waited for the rest of it.
I waited for the reasons, the second helping of them that Lydia would have served, soft and wet, with her hand on my sleeve.
Freja gave me nothing.
She stood with her chin up and her eyes on mine, and she let it land.
