Chapter 16: Rain in the Rows
Susie's POV
I told him in the rain, on my hands and knees in the wet grass, with his mouth between my legs.
He had not said a word to me since Fort Valley.
At dark he had walked out of the kitchen and into the pecan rows, and I had followed him in my socks.
The sky opened at the fourth tree.
I stood in front of him with water running into my eyes and said, "Ask me again."
"How many times?" he said.
"Every time you want. Ask me."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he pointed at the ground.
"Down," Jesse said. "Hands and knees."
I got down.
The grass was cold and soaked through my jeans, and the rain beat on my back.
He peeled my jeans and underwear off my hips and left them around my knees.
He knelt behind me, and his big hands closed on my ass and spread me.
"Talk," he said. "While I do this. Every word, and don't stop."
His tongue slid along me from behind, slow and flat.
I cried out and my elbows buckled.
"My mother," I said. "Carol."
"Go on."
"She was a Pettigrew. She married a mechanic at twenty and her father never spoke to her again."
His tongue circled my clit and then dipped lower, and my voice broke.
"I grew up in a rental in Macon," I said. "I did the books at a dentist's office."
He slid two fingers inside me, curled them, and held them there.
"I didn't know he had money," I said. "I didn't know any of it."
"Keep going," he said.
"He died in May. The lawyer called. He left me everything."
His mouth went back to work, long licks and then quick flicks that made me shake.
"Three thousand eight hundred acres," I said, panting. "A cold room. A huller. The ground under your father's shed."
"Under my father's shed."
"Under the dock. Under the whole thing."
