Chapter 24: One Dollar
On New Year's morning I woke before he did.
I lay in the iron bed with his hand on my hip and the pale light on the quilt.
The house was quiet.
Frost lay on the pecan limbs outside the window, and nobody was shaking anything.
I turned over.
He slept on his back with his mouth a little open and the white scar showing over his ribs.
I looked at him for a long time.
Then I slid down the bed, lifted the quilt, and took him in my mouth.
He woke with a groan that rattled the headboard.
"Susie," he said, thick with sleep. "Good morning."
I hummed around him.
His hand dropped to my hair.
"That's the best way I've ever woken up," Jesse said. "I'm going to remember it on my deathbed."
I took him deep and slow, and I felt him swell on my tongue.
He lay back and let me, his fingers stroking my braid.
I worked him with my mouth and my hand, steady, patient, until his hips lifted and his breath came short.
I pulled back to the tip and swirled my tongue under the head, and he cursed softly at the ceiling.
"Susie, you're going to make me late for the new year," he said.
"It's already here."
"Then it's going to start right."
I went down on him again, slow and wet, with my fingers around the base.
I felt the whole length of his body tighten under the quilt.
